Hey y'all!

It's India, your pearl-loving friend and Founder of The Pearl Girls!

At The Pearl Girls, we believe pearls are meant to be worn and loved for a lifetime — and then passed on to the next generation. Pearls are durable, but they are also organic gems, so they need a little extra TLC to keep their natural beauty shining bright for years to come.

Here’s everything you need to know to keep your pearls looking their very best!

📌 1. Wear Your Pearls!

Did you know pearls love to be worn?
They come from a very humid climate... the water and they love the natural humidity of our skin! Skin keeps pearls hydrated and lustrous. So don’t keep them locked away — enjoy them often!

Now, the only problem with wearing them is that the oils in our skin, over time, can break down the surface of pearls! Plus all the acids we wear... perfumes, skin care and hair care can adversely affect the nacre of a pearl. So...

🧴 2. Last On, First Off

Our best rule:

Put your pearls on last when getting ready — and take them off first when you get home.

This simple habit keeps them safe from residue and chemicals.

🧽 3. Wipe Them Down

After wearing your pearls, gently wipe them with a soft, lint-free cloth. This removes any oils, sweat, or residue and keeps them glowing.

For extra care, you can lightly dampen the cloth with water — but never soak your pearls or use harsh cleaners. If necessary, like to sud my hands with a gentle ivory soap and gently wash my pearls. But I only do that after I spill my coffee on my pearl necklace because desperate times call for desperate (but responsible) measures.

💧 4. Keep Them Dry

Never shower, swim, or exercise in your pearls. Yes, they like water! But that silk thread...not so much! Silk stretches when wet! And this can weaken the silk thread and lead to wear on your beautiful pearls. When the knots stretch out, they are no longer doing their job of protecting your pearls.

And washing your hands over and over wearing that gorgeous pearl ring? Well that is goubg to wear it down over time.Trust me, we replace alot of pearls in rings!

And the pool? Don't even think about it! Even though you look SO cute in your swimsuit and pearls! I love a good pool party! But, I save my more durable mother-of-pearl earrings for my dip in the pool or jaunt to the beach!

If your pearl necklace or bracelet gets damp, lay it flat on a soft towel and let it dry completely before putting your pearls away. Speaking of...

📦 5. Store Those Pearls Properly

Store your pearls in a soft cloth pouch or a separate jewelry box compartment. We have gorgeous pouches at The Pearl Girls. Let me know, I will send you one!

Also, don’t toss them in with metal jewelry, which can scratch their surface.

Even hanging strands of pearls can stretch the silk over time.

🔄 6. Restring When Needed

Over time, silk thread naturally weakens — especially if you wear your pearls often (which we hope you do!).

A good rule of thumb:

Restring your pearls every 1–2 years — o

r sooner if you see fraying or stretching.

At The Pearl Girls, we specialize in expert restringing and reknotting. We’ll make your strand strong, secure, and beautiful again! We have a one year warranty on our restringing work!

Pearls are little miracles from nature — treat them kindly, and they’ll be treasures you or your loved ones can wear forever.
