Types of Pearls

Sun, Mar 18, 2018 | Pearl Blog

I got a message this week from Josh. Josh wanted more information "on the types of pearls utilized in the Graduated Pearl Necklace. Saltwater, etc..." This is a great question... and one which I thought might be of interest to y'all! You know, we

always talk about the subject of saltwater versus freshwater because many pearl buyers do not realize that freshwater pearls are cultured pearls, too! I know that freshwater pearls used to be synonymous with lower quality pearls. But, boy how times have changed. There are lots of freshwater pearls on the market, but if you invest in the top percentage of freshwater pearls, you are investing in high quality, gorgeous pearls! Here is my response to Josh about the types of pearls in our Graduated Pearl Necklace!

Hi Josh!

Thanks so much for reaching out! I am so sorry it has taken me so long to respond! Please accept my apologies.

Our graduated pearl necklace is so beautiful! This necklace and most of our pieces feature high quality freshwater pearls. We use tissue nucleated pearls meaning they are closer to natural pearls and do not have a bead nucleus. They take longer to form and tend to be slightly heavier. Over 50% of the work we do is reknot and repair work so we see alot of bead nucleated pearls that simply turn into beads over time. This is because they are nucleated with a mother of pearl bead with a cultured pearl nacre covering the bead. If the nacre isnt very thick, it will simply rub off. This always makes me so sad! It is impossible to revitalize these pearls! So, although some of our international collection (black pearls from French Polynesia, rainbow pearls from Mexico and golden South Sea Pearls from the Philippines, to name a few), have a bead nucleus, for our gorgeous white traditional pearls, we choose to use freshwater pearls!graduated pearl necklace by The Pearl Girls - types of pearls

The Graduated Pearl Necklace starts with a large 10mm pearl and gets smaller down to our 2mm pearls. I think because it starts with larger 10mm, then 9mm pearls, I like it much better than the typical delicate graduated pearls.

Let me know your thoughts! And please reach out with any more questions. I promise to be more prompt with my response!

Best,

India
