So, here is my secret: I am a full time pearl buyer and some time pearl hoarder. Today, as I was opening my top drawer to stash away some important tax documents, I noticed two beautiful South Sea pearls I scored in the Philippines. They rolled around slightly in their soft organza bag, begging me to pay attention to them. They are huge, beautiful beyond words and they belong in an amazing piece of jewelry. But, today was not their day, and I had to close my drawer on them.
I travel the world in search of beautiful pearls and I love to collect the unique and eclectic. And sometimes I like to keep my finds a secret. Almost eight months ago, I slipped away to Hong Kong for a long weekend. I was intending to stay longer but a stormy layover in Toronto shortened my trip. Many of you have enjoyed the pearls I found in Hong Kong, but, you haven’t seen these. These beauties stayed tucked away but now I am so excited the time has come to show them off!
Meet, pearl fish! That’s right, little pearls in the shape of a fish. These are about 11mm long. They were formed with a mother of pearl fish was inserted in the mollusk. And the mollusk formed a pearl around the mother of pearl piece. This is the same method used in coin pearls, but with a unique and beautiful effect.
We decided to dangle these fish from their own silver “line.” The silver ball is adjustable extending the necklace from 16″ to 18″ and adjusting the drop of the fish. Enjoy this Fish Pearl Necklace!
I am a modern day treasure hunter who travels the world for gorgeous pearls and amazing adventures. I own a pearl jewelry and jewelry repair business, ThePearlGirls.com, with a cute retail store in Athens, GA.
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. When he found one very precious pearl, he went away and sold all he had and bought it. Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea and caught all kinds of fish.…” Matthew 13:46-47
